Gurgon
Tibet.15-16th Century

Mahakala is a wrathful deity who appears in many forms, and is most notable as a protector of the Buddhist teachings. He is sometimes seen in the form of Four Mahakala Brothers arrayed along the bottom of scroll paintings from which position he prevents the entry of harmful spirits.
The present figure is a well cast and balanced example from the 15-16 th cent. Of note is the fine casting and the manner in which additional sections such as the garland of skulls has been added with their own supports. The wreath which spreads around his shoulders is one of the hallmarks of the early date for the piece, as are the ends of the scarf which are pendant above his knees.
