Amitayus is the deity of Long Life and is said to be related
to Amitabha, Boundless Light. Amitayus holds a vessel, in
Tibetan known as the Tse boom, or Vessel of Life. It contains
an elixir which the meditator on the form of Amitayus may
sample and gain the benefits of. The decorations which hang
pendant from the vessel were originally meant to be fronds
of a plant suggesting the power of the contents to encourage
growth. Here they have become bejewelled decorative tassels.
Of interest is the engraving on the base plate which depicts
a double vajra of absolute power surrounded by the Eight
Auspicious Symbols (Sanskrit; Astamangalam. Tibetan; bKra
shis brtags brgyad. Pronounced Tashi Tagyay.). These are
an ancient Indian motif which represent the gifts one would
give to a respected person if one were able to.
